Roundtable on Dam Type Selection

Deputy Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Food Processing Industry, Bakyt Torobaev, participated in a roundtable on the selection of the dam type for the Kambarata-1 Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP). The event was also attended by representatives from the relevant government agencies of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as World Bank specialists and international experts.

This meeting holds considerable significance for the successful implementation of the Kambarata-1 HPP project, as the selection of the dam type and the subsequent development of the feasibility study are critical milestones in the project's progression.

The World Bank is one of the partners funding the preparatory work for the Kambarata-1 HPP project. The feasibility study is being done by the Swiss engineering company AFRY. As a result of the roundtable, the dam type was selected, and the decision was made to finalize the feasibility study by May 2025.

Currently, active preparatory works for the construction of the Kambarata-1 HPP are underway. As of August 30, 2024, the construction of a 1,388-meter transport tunnel was completed. One lane of the 15-kilometer concrete road is already finished. Electrical line installation has been completed by 80%. The construction of a 110 kV power line and a 110/6 kV substation is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. Additionally, work is underway to build a bridge over the Naryn River and a settlement for the workers. All the preparatory stages for the HPP construction are expected to be completed by May 2025.
